When the last of Mary and Larry Schleicher’s children got married they decided it was time to sell their two-story home in Bartlett and simplify their lifestyle.
“We knew we wanted to downsize and get into a ranch home,” Mary Schleicher said. “Larry and I went to Huntley to visit an age-restricted community and it just wasn’t for us. We didn’t like how close the homes were together, all the restrictions in the neighborhood and we liked the idea of younger people living around us not just those 55 and older.”
On the Schleicher’s return trip from Huntley they saw a sign for Highland Woods, a master-planned community in Elgin where William Ryan Homes currently offers homes in two of the twelve neighborhoods. The community is highlighted by a multi-million dollar Owners Club, a water park, 196 acres of open space with natural preserved areas, lushly landscaped green space, the 18-acre lake, seven parks and playgrounds, and over five miles of nature trails and bicycle/walking paths. Highly-rated District 301 schools serve the community, and Country Trails elementary school is within Highland Woods.
“We stopped into the sales center and fell in love with the Carlisle ranch plan,” said Mary. “Larry wanted a nice-sized yard and a full basement and I wanted an open kitchen and family room. We were impressed with the pool, clubhouse and overall neighborhood so we went back to Bartlett, put our house up for sale and bought the Carlisle.”
Larry and Mary purchased their ranch plan in the Woodcrest neighborhood of Highland Woods. In addition to the 2,200-square-foot ranch plan buyers may select from a collection of two-story designs with prices ranging from $307,990 to $343,990. Homes in both the Woodcrest and Meadows Edge neighborhood at Highland Woods are available for immediate delivery, including the professionally-decorated Jensen model at 3652 Ancient Oak Drive.
The Schleicher’s shared their exciting moving news with their son Michael and his wife Jen who, at the time, were living in a townhome in Streamwood and expecting their second child.
“We weren’t really planning on moving but I got on the William Ryan website to see the home they (Mary and Larry) selected and check out the neighborhood,” Jen Schleicher said. “Their website really drew me in and I started an online chat with the sales person. I decided to take a drive out to Highland Woods and look at the model.”
Jen and Michael decided to purchase the two-story Sheridan plan in the Meadows Edge neighborhood at Highland Woods.
“We fell in love with the homesite and knew we wanted new construction,” Jen said. “We are not fixer-upper people and didn’t want the hassle of updating a kitchen or putting on a new roof. I also have terrible allergies and didn’t want risk moving into a home that could trigger those or worry about ripping up and installing new carpet.”
Another draw for Jen was the sense of community she felt at Highland Woods.
“We have a 3 ½ year-old daughter and 1 ½ year old son who play everyday with kids their age throughout the neighborhood,” Jen said. “They will be walking to the neighborhood grammar school everyday with their friends which is terrific. Now that they’re a bit older we can spend more time at the pool this summer. It’s really a very tight-knit community. Each neighborhood has its own Facebook page where we communicate about everything from the week’s garage sale to a lost dog found in the park.”
William Ryan offers both ranch and two-story plans in the Meadows Edge neighborhood with home ranging from 2,008 to 3,785 square feet in size and priced from $259,990 to $351,990.
For Larry and Mary being close to their children and grandchildren is ideal.
“We are about a mile from Jen and Michael which gives everybody privacy but allows us to spend time with our children and grandchildren easily,” Mary said. “It’s nice to get together for gatherings or meet Jen with the kids at the pool.”
As for Jen and Michael, the benefit of being close to family is equally as rewarding.
“Just last week I locked myself out of the house and my father-in-law was here it two minutes to let me back in,” Jen said. “When our snow blower broke down last winter we knew help was around the corner. We can walk to each other’s house for barbecues or help each other in a moments notice. It’s great.”
