Highland Woods Wine Lovers Take Note

Not only is Elgin’s inaugural Wine Festival taking place this Saturday at Festival Park (located just north of the Grand Victoria Riverboat Casino), but downtown Elgin is getting a new upscale winery opening this week.

First, join hundreds of wine aficionados as you taste more than 150 wines from around the world. Just come to Festival Park at 132 S. Grove St. in downtown Elgin, right along the Fox River. You’ll have the chance to speak with winemakers and experts alike, discuss the different wines available and even dine on food from Biaggi’s Restaurante Italiano, Red Bar Winery and Bistro, Mandile’s Restaurant, Casa Lara Restaurant, Buckingham’s Grand Victoria Casino and Old Town Pizza Company and other restaurants.

For those of you who’s palette runs a bit more to the hops and barley, there will also be a beer garden at the event, featuring Stella, Leffe and Hoegaarden beers. Musical entertainment is planned, as are wine seminars and cooking demonstrations from Meijer’s Healthy Living Advisor Maribel Cabrales.

Tickets are $20 in advance (includes a souvenir wine glass and 10 tasting tickets) and can be purchased through Friday at ElginWineFestival.com, or you can purchase them at the festival for $30. Additional tasting coupons are available for a small fee.

Next, one of the restaurants featured at the Wine Festival, the Red Bar Winery and Bistro, is announcing their grand opening this Friday, May 22nd. Dinner specials and giveaways are planned for the next week to celebrate the opening of Elgin’s newest downtown attraction.

The winery and bistro is owned by Jim and Doris Canfield, longtime wine experts (Jim even creates his own wine in the basement of his home in Sycamore), and is located at 74 S. Grove Avenue, next to the location of where the old Crocker Theater used to be. For more information on the grand opening event, be sure to download a PDF of their flyer.

The Red Bar Winery offers:

  • Wine Appreciation Classes
  • Create your own “Private Label”
  • Wine Making Workshops
  • Free Wine “Tastings” Daily
  • Wine And Food Pairing Events
  • Enjoy your own Wine Making Experience
  • Bottle wine, create your private label and store it at the winery

The grand opening is this Friday at 5 p.m.
